God later punished David for his sin, but Joab got off the hook again. Joab knew when to keep the king happy. When he was made commander of the army of Israel, he made sure David got credit for his own cunning in battle 2 Sam. When David unwisely attempted to order a census of the people of Israel, presumably to take stock of his military potential instead of relying of the power of God, Joab advised the king not to take such a step.

But when David gave the immoral order, Joab carried it out. Again, God became irritated with David and punished him. And once again, helpful Joab got off unpunished.

The politically astute Joab cared little for Absalom, Tamar, the rape, or the revenge murder. In a subsequent military encounter, Joab asked to speak privately with his new commander. While Amasa was bleeding to death in the street, Joab rallied the men on the very military expedition David had sent Amasa on, and won the day.

Joab made only one serious political mistake.

Solomon was not impressed and ordered Banaiah son of Jehoiada to hack Joab to bits at the altar, which he gladly did. However, as related in the first book of Kings , Solomon had many foreign women among his wives. In the biblical account of his reign, God tells Solomon he will punish him for his apostasy by breaking up his kingdom after his death.

Solomon was succeeded by his son Rehoboam, who continued the harsh policies of his father toward the northern tribes of Israel. The northern tribes seceded and made Jeroboam , an official of Solomon who had led a rebellion against him, king.
